Caution Before You Climb

If you are stuck on the ground before your maintenance, get started with a pair of binoculars. Many problems can be spotted without ever getting on your roof, like curled, cupped, missing, or loose shingles. Look for patches of exposed underlay or blistered roofing. If you have a ladder, climb up and scan a few locations around your roof.
Get Dirty to Keep Your Roof Clean
Start with cleaning and flushing your gutters. Just like flossing for many adults, most homeowners know that they should do it frequently, but end up putting it off. Also just like flossing, putting it off can cause major damage and costly repairs. Do this frequently, especially when leaves are falling off the trees or after a heavy storm. Remove any debris like leaves or sticks. If you don’t care for your gutters regularly, water can overflow back into your roof system and eventually cause damage.
Once your gutters are sparkling (okay, clean enough) remove any branches, leaves, Frisbees, or debris from your roof. If you find a lot of tree debris on your roof during your maintenance, take a look at the tree limbs and bushes surrounding your roof. Make sure that they are not touching your roofing system and trim them away from your house so that they fall away from your home.
Check your roof while you’re flushing out your gutters for any signs of moss or algae growth. These growths trap moisture, which will eventually compromise the longevity of your roofing system. Call in a roofing professional immediately and they will remove any moss or algae growth with a chlorine solution.
What’s On the Inside? It Counts.
Even if you don’t regularly use your home’s attic, make sure to visit it regularly, especially after big storms or weather events. Check for signs of moisture like visible water on the floor, water stains, or wood rot.
