Most people never really give gutters a thought, but they are an integral part of the roof of almost every building. It is extremely important that gutters are properly maintained. They may not look like much, but your gutters are vital in the protection of both your home and your property. If your gutters aren’t properly installed and maintained, you can face some real problems later on down the road.
The Basics
Basically, the main purpose of your gutters is to catch rain that would normally come cascading down your roof every time it rains and re-direct that rain to the downspout. The downspout will then direct the water flow away from your home’s foundation in an effort to ward off water damage. Without gutters, all that water can run straight down into your foundation and cause all sorts of problems.
Protecting Your Home and Property
Having all of that rain water come down your roof every time it rains would not be good. Any landscaping you have up against your home would drown, and the land around your home would turn into a swamp-like mess of mud and water. Water that lands too close to the walls of your home will soak into the soil there and cause some real damage. Soil erosion can let the foundation move, or if there’s a crack anywhere in your foundation water can get in and mold can grow.
Accessorize Your Gutters
There are a couple of things you can get to add to your gutters that will help them do their job. The most common of these things is a leaf screen, or grill. The leaf screen’s job is to keep pesky leaves and twigs out of your gutters so they don’t get all clogged up. If foreign objects get lodged in your gutters, they can create blockages that will cause the water to flow over the sides. Having the leaf screen on your gutters does not meant they don’t still need to be cleaned regularly, though. Regular cleaning is one of the easiest ways to make sure your gutters protect your home for years to come.
