There are a great many roofing contractors out there. Unfortunately, not all of them are being totally honest about their skill level or level of certification. Fortunately, asking a potential roofing contractor the right questions and paying attention to their answers can help to make sure you end up with the right one.
Did they Actually Get onto the Roof?
To most people, this seems pretty obvious, but you would be surprised how many contractors give a customer a quote without actually inspecting the work to be done. How do they know what actually needs to be done without going up there and taking a look? A thorough roofing contractor will come prepared with a ladder, tape measure, and flashlight. They will ask to see your attic and the walls and ceilings inside your home, as well as the roof itself.
Licensed, Bonded, and Insured
Getting a new roof, or even just repairing part of a roof, comes with a certain set of risks. If something happens, you don’t want to be caught in the fallout. Ensuring the roofing contractor you decide to go with has all of the necessary licensing and is bonded and insured will give you peace of mind knowing that if anything happens, it will be dealt with properly.
History and Portfolio
Ask questions about the company and its past projects. How long have they been in business? Have they always served the same area? Has their business ever changed name or ownership? These are important questions for making sure the contractor isn’t just “here today and gone tomorrow.” You should also ask to see references and/or photos of past projects. Seeing work that the company has done in the past can give you an idea of what to expect for your roofing project.
