Vinyl siding is one of the most popular siding materials used for many great reasons—its durability, flexibility, and classic appeal. Luckily, keeping vinyl siding clean is also a simple process. Here are our best tips for freshening up your vinyl siding this summer.
Remove Dirt from Your Vinyl Siding
If you have dirt to remove on your vinyl siding:
- Use a spray nozzle or pressure washer set on medium spray
- Make sure that your pressure washer is set wide so that it doesn’t damage the siding
- Keep the hose or pressure washer moving constantly, returning to spots as needed instead of leaving it on that spot for long periods of time
- Work from the bottom up, finishing with a quick rinse at the top
- Always angle your spray down the siding to prevent moisture from creeping underneath the siding and causing a problem
Need Some Extra Help?
If your siding needs a little bit more than just simple dirt removal, you might need to make an additional cleaning solution. Combine 1 gallon of water, 1/3 cup of powdered laundry detergent, and 2/3 cup of trisodium phosphate. Use a soft-bristled brush to softly scrub the siding. Again, start at the bottom and work your way up. When rinsing, start at the top and work your way down.
Remove Mold and Mildew from Your Vinyl Siding
Getting rid of mold and mildew from your vinyl siding is a little bit trickier. Wet down any plants that are directly near the siding on your home and cover them with sheeting so that they are not damaged during the mold removal process. Use a pump sprayer and wet down the length of your vinyl siding with a diluted bleach mixture or a vinyl siding cleaner. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes. If needed, use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the vinyl siding. Rinse from top to bottom and reassess if the siding needs any more elbow grease. If not, let the siding dry and then remove the plastic sheeting and rinse off your plants.
