The windows in your home play an important role in keeping your family and friends comfortable in cool weather. As summer is coming to a close, now is the time to start thinking about your window performance and if they’re in the best condition. Give your windows a once-over to see if there are any necessary repairs you’ll need to make. Here are some ways to prepare your windows for cooler weather.
Caulk and Weather Stripping
One of your most important defenses against cold weather and moisture in the home is your caulk and weather stripping. Check to make sure that they are both in place and in good condition. As time goes on, both of these elements will slowly wear down and become less dependable. Not only does this allow air and moisture to seep in, but it allows your heat to escape, causing an increase in your energy bills. Before the weather gets cool, take the time to reapply your caulk and replace your weather stripping. This is how you’ll know that you’ve achieved a tight seal.
The Locks
In addition to providing security for your home, the locks make sure that when your windows are closed, they are tightly held in place. Check the locks for rust, loose fasteners, and loose screws. This may be a project that you can do on your own but if you’re not feeling confident, you can call your local window company to make the repairs and replace the locks.
The Sills and Frames
The frame in which your window sits can become damaged over time. It will make your window less secure in the wall and also allow for air leakage. Think about how it’s been since your window frames and sills were installed or last repaired. It might be time for new repairs or even replacement.
Invest in Upgrades
Invest in energy efficient window models. They are specifically designed to make your home more energy efficient in general with high-quality frame materials and double-paned glass that reduce heat transfer. Some models even include air or gas in the space between the panes for even better insulation.
