One of your most important defenses against cold weather and moisture in the home is your caulk and weather stripping. Check to make sure that they are both in place and in good condition. As time goes on, both of these elements will slowly wear down and become less dependable. Not only does this allow air and moisture to seep in, but it allows your heat to escape, causing an increase in your energy bills. Before the weather gets cool, take the time to reapply your caulk and replace your weather stripping. This is how you’ll know that you’ve achieved a tight seal.

The frame in which your window sits can become damaged over time. It will make your window less secure in the wall and also allow for air leakage. Think about how it’s been since your window frames and sills were installed or last repaired. It might be time for new repairs or even replacement.

Some models even include air or gas in the space between the panes for even better insulation.
