Clarifying 3 Common Roofing Misconceptions

There are a lot of “tips and tricks” out there, and sadly not all of them are true.

There are a lot of “tips and tricks” out there, and sadly not all of them are true. Your roofing is one of the most important outer elements of your home, so if you hear something that doesn’t sound quite right, do some research before you believe it.

The More Insulation, the Better

While it is true that your roofing contractor should make sure that your home’s roof is well insulated, it is actually possible to put in too much insulation. It is a perfectly logical conclusion that more insulation is better, but that’s actually not true. If there is too much insulation under your roof, it can actually cause some pretty extensive damage. The excess insulation can trap moisture from humidity, precipitation, etc. and it can cause your roofing to warp, mold, or even rot.

Gutters and Roofing Really Don’t Have Much in Common

There are a lot of people out there who don’t really realize the actual job that your home’s gutters are responsible for. Your roofing and your gutters are designed to work hand in hand to protect your home from water damage. Without gutters, all of that rain water that runs off of your roof would just fall down to the walls of your home, soaking the ground around your foundation. All of that water could cause some major damage over time. With properly maintained gutters, the water runs down your roof into the gutters, and the gutters carry it a safe distance from your home before depositing it somewhere in your yard. Some homeowners even collect the rainwater in a barrel to use when doing outdoor chores!

You Only Need to Replace the Flashing if You Replace the Roof

The flashing is the pieces of metal that keep water flow from entering any of the vents or pipes on your roof. Many homeowners don’t think that these should be replaced unless you are replacing your roof. Sometimes, your flashing an actually last longer than your roofing shingles, but sometimes it actually needs to be replaced more often. The flashing on your roof should be inspected regularly for any signs of damage.
