Though it may seem as though autumn only lasted a couple of days, winter is right around the corner! The cold weather is quickly approaching and it’s important for us to prepare our homes. The roof of your home is what holds everything together, so you want it to be in good shape for the winter season. Here is how to prepare your roof for the upcoming winter!
Clean off Debris
Debris can build up on your roof and cause things like mold or fungus to grow on the surface. For this reason, the first thing you want to do to prepare your roof for the winter is clean off any leaves, branches, dirt, and other debris off of your roof. While you are doing this, it is also a good idea to do a quick inspection of your gutters and downspouts to ensure that they aren’t sagging or overflowing.
Water Infiltration
Home insulation is so important all year round, but especially during the winter season because of snowfall and moisture. Damaged insulation could cause mold to build up in your home and will definitely increase those energy bills as well. Insulation replacements can be pretty costly, but are necessary when there is damage present. Before you get the insulation replaced, you first want to figure out where the water is infiltrating the roof. Once you do this, you should fix the leak first and then replace the insulation.
Roof Edge
The edge of your roof is the first defense mechanism against any precipitation and severe weather. It is best to inspect the roof’s edge from the roof and from the ground so that you can view it from multiple angles. Looking from the ground first allows you to identify any weak spots before getting a close up view from the roof. You are looking for any loose fasteners, faded paint, loose metal, or standing water. Fixing these problems before the cold weather really hits is the best way to prepare your roof for the upcoming winter season.
