Winter is nearly here and pretty soon we will have to contend with winter precipitation. Snow and ice can do a number on your roof, so it’s a good idea to check your roof for any problems and do some basic maintenance tasks. Small problems now will cost less and be faster to fix now than waiting for the problem to become more serious later on. Here are three ways to keep your roof maintained this winter to ensure it lasts a long time.
Keep Your Gutters Clear
Gutters and drainpipes work to direct water from your roof as the snow and ice melt. If your gutters are clogged, water will collect in them and this is not good when freezing temperatures start to set in. Frozen drain spouts and gutters can lead to leaks in your building and wreck your drainage system. Make sure you’re keeping up with keeping your gutters clean in order to prevent this kind of damage this winter.
Roof Inspection
Think back to the last time your roof was inspected or repaired for any reason. If you can’t remember, you probably ought to have it looked at now. Structurally sound roofing is able to withstand major blizzards, but structurally unstable roofs are not. And, as you’re aware, major winter snowfalls are no stranger to the Mid-Atlantic region. Better to be safe than sorry. Two definite signs you should look out for: a roof that sags in the middle, and evidence of water damage in the attic and ceilings.
Snow Removal and Your Safety
When major snow does come, you may have questions on how much your roof can withstand. A professional roofing company can help you determine this when they come out to inspect it before the storm. But don’t try to take matters into your own hands in removing snow from your roof. Conditions will be very slippery and one slip is all that it takes to incur serious injury or even death. Best to leave that job to a professional with the proper equipment and training!
