You’ve done your research. You’ve finally settled on what you believe will be the perfect replacement roof for your home. You’re done, right? Unfortunately, you’re actually not. You should know that while your roof is being worked on there will be roofers literally crawling all over. Your home will be a construction site. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your roof replacement.
Get Your Yard Ready
Your property is about to be a construction site, so you should prepare it accordingly. Be sure to clear the space of lawn furniture. If you have children, make sure there are no toys in the way. Clearing all the clutter creates a much safer working environment for your construction team.
If you have an outdoor air conditioning unit, this will need to be protected as well. You can sit a sheet of plywood on top so falling debris can’t get in. Be sure to turn off your thermostat inside and totally unplug the unit beforehand. If it’s the middle of summer and too warm to do this, it’s relatively easy to build a little shelter for your A/C unit that will keep it protected but still let air flow freely around it.
Keep it Clean
There’s a lot of debris involved in roof replacement, and your company will probably need to use some sort of roll-away dumpster or truck. The closer this is to your home, the less debris there will be all over the place.
Make Sure the Attic is Accessible
Remember all those times you thought that maybe you should organize the attic a bit? Well, time to stop procrastinating. Your roofing contractors may need to get in there. Make sure the lead contractor knows how to get to the attic and that the path is clear. The more they know, the smoother your roof replacement project will go.
Protect Fragile Items
A roof replacement can create quite a bit of vibration. If you have mirrors or other delicate things hanging up, make sure they’re totally secure or just take them down altogether. These projects can also create a lot of dust. Protect your furniture and belongings by just throwing a sheet over them.
Once your project is finished, be sure to maintain it to get the most from your investment!
